Abuja, July 21, 2025 – Some retired police officers staged a protest at the entrance of the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday over poor pension benefits.
They called for their removal from the contributory pension scheme, which they described as exploitative.
The protesters, who braved the rainfall, carried placards of different inscriptions.
One of the protesters, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said their poor retirement benefits could not compensate them for their years of service to Nigeria.
He described their years in service as years of neglect, low renumeration and poor treatment.
The protesters said they would sustain their protest until their demands were met by the government.
Omoyele Sowore, a journalist and activist, who was sighted among the protesters, called on the federal government to intervene in the matter.
He said the retired policemen deserved better retirement benefits in view of their service to the country.
