Washington, March 17, 2025 – Donald Trump’s escalating trade war will hit the president’s supporters the hardest, according to a new analysis.
The president has beefed up the tariffs as part of his effort to reshape America’s trading partnership with the world.
The retaliatory tariffs target industries in swing states that employ 9.5 percent of people in Wisconsin, 8.5 percent of people in Indiana and 8.4 percent of people in Iowa.
Experts say industries hit by retaliatory tariffs are likely to sell fewer goods on foreign markets, which could lead to lower profits and job losses.
A new DailyMail.com.poll. conducted with J.L. Partners, shows that voters are still unsure about tariffs.
Less than 40 percent support more tariffs on various imported products from foreign countries, although roughly 30 percent of voters remain unclear of how they feel about them.
Thirty-nine percent of voters in the poll support more tariffs on precious metals, pearls and stones, 37 percent support them on plastics.
Other tariffs most supported by Americans include vehicles, machinery and iron and steel.
The tariffs that remain the least popular are on pharmaceutical products, clothing, and furniture.
Trump’s tariffs caused the 77th fastest stock market slump on record on Thursday when the S&P 500 dropped below 10 percent.
A 10 percent drop is a big enough deal that professional investors have a name for it – a ‘correction’ – and the S&P 500´s 1.4 percent slide on Thursday sent the index to its first since 2023.
The losses came after Trump upped the stakes in his trade war by threatening huge taxes on European wines and alcohol.
The turbulence is a result of uncertainty about how much pain Trump will let the economy endure through tariffs and other policies in order to reshape the country and world as he wants.
