Washington, Aug. 5, 2026 – President Donald Trump announced “major combat operations” against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.
Delegations from the U.S. and Iran entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries.
The U.S. and Iran have nonetheless continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz the primary flashpoint.
Speaking to reporters on the tarmac before heading to Las Vegas, Nevada, on Tuesday night, President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are “moving along very nicely” and said there would be more information in 48 hours.
“We’re moving along very nicely. You’ll find out. We’ll know in 48 hours,” he said.
Asked about an Axios report that says the U.S. aims to announce an agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz Wednesday, Trump said this “could happen” Wednesday or Thursday.
“Could happen. Tomorrow or the next day. A lot of progress has been made,” Trump said. (Yahoo Finance)
