Abuja, Nov. 5, 2024 – Nigeria incurred over N300 billion worth of losses during the 10-day nationwide protests in August.
Kashim Shettima, the Vice President, said this on Tuesday while receiving the minors who were detained for their participation in the protests at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The minors were released on Tuesday following the dismissal of their charges by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
The Vice President said the losses were incurred through the destructions and disruption of economic activities during the protests.
He said there were “incontrovertible digital video and photographic evidence” of some protesters’ actions, which were allegedly uploaded by the participants themselves.
Shettima said the minors were released on compassionate ground in spite of the weighty evidence against them.
“The President, as the father of the nation, is giving these young men another chance to become responsible citizens.
“I urge you, our children, to use the President’s magnanimous gesture wisely and contribute to society’s growth rather than its destruction,” he said.
Shettima called on state governors and eminent Nigerians at the occasion to join efforts in rehabilitating the released minors.
