Lagos, April 9, 2026 – The US Department of State has advised non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave the US Embassy in Abuja because of the growing insecurity across Nigeria.
The department gave the travel advisory on Wednesday, also advising US citizens to reconsider travelling to the country due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.
The advisory was classified as Level 3 and Level 4.
The U.S government advised its citizens to reconsider travelling to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, and inconsistent availability of health care services.
The “Do Not Travel” advisory was issued to U.S. citizens travelling to Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and northern Adamawa states due to terrorism, crime, and kidnapping
The Travel ban was issued in respect of Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states due to unrest, crime, and kidnapping.
The travel ban was issued in respect of Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers states (with the exception of Port Harcourt) due to crime, kidnapping, and unrest.
The U.S. also added Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states to the list of “Do Not Travel” areas, bringing the total to 23 states where travel is strongly discouraged.
