Subsidy: President has directed me to take over negotiation with labour

Abuja, Aug. 21, 2023 – Simon Lalong, the new Minister of Labour and Employment, says President Tinubu has directed him to take over negotiations on palliatives on petrol subsidy removal with labour.

He said this while addressing directors, heads of parastatals and agencies as well the staff of the ministry on assumption of office on Monday.

He assured that the Federal Government, through his ministry, would work closely with the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress and their affiliates towards ensuring that all pending industrial disputes are settled amicably.

The minister said the government would address, with strong determination, the new minimum wage and other palliatives arising from the removal of fuel subsidy

The minister said that this administration would not spare any effort to protect Nigerian workers and guarantee their dignity at all times.

The minister also promised that the ministry would fulfil its mandate of ensuring decent work for all Nigerians and making sure that citizens, particularly the youth and women, has the opportunity to deploy their energy, creativity, talent and gifts to the development of the nation.

Lalong described his appointment as a call to service and promised to do anything to ensure the success of this administration.

“Nigerians have trusted President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima with their mandate, and therefore expect a better nation where their dreams and aspirations will be fulfilled.

“The President has, in turn, mandated us to handle the very important aspects of Labour and Employment, which are critical to national development and prosperity.

“The task is certainly enormous, but achievable, especially with the abundant human resources Nigeria is endowed with. We therefore need your support and understanding to succeed.” (GBN)
