Abuja, Dec. 11, 2025 – The House of Representatives on Thursday advised the federal government to reduce high fares to enable many Nigerians to travel by air during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The House advised that government should introduce tax reliefs and reduce airport charges to enable the airlines operators to reduce the air fares during the season.
It made the suggestions following the adoption of a motion for amendments to a motion of urgent public importance on “The exorbitant rise of airline ticket cost and the consequential impact on security of lives, air ambulance cost”.
The motion, sponsored by Obinna Aguocha from Abia State, had argued that the air transportation in Nigeria had been bedeviled by constant fare increases which operators blame on foreign exchange problems.
He said the high fares, had in turn, shut out many Nigerians out of air transportation.
The House, in adopting the motion, condemned the current high air fares in the country which had forced many Nigerians to travel by roads wit attendant high security risks.
