Osogbo, Feb. 21, 2025 – Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun State says the state will conduct its scheduled local government elections on Saturday.
The governor said the elections would be conducted on scheduled in spite of the advice by Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to suspend the elections.
Olawale Rasheed, the Spokesman the governor, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
The statement said the governor had insisted on conducting the election since democracy is guided by the rule of law, and no individual has the authority to override the courts.
“My advice to all parties, including local and national stakeholders, is to abide by democratic norms.
“As for me and my people, we stand by the rule of law, not illegal self-help. Election is going to hold, and the outcome will be a fast-tracked development at the local level. I urge our people to remain peaceful. Osun is a truly peaceful state.”
Fagbemi, had on Thursday, advised the governor to suspend the local government elections in view of the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal which overturned an earlier Federal High Court judgment on the issue.
The judgment reinstated the sacked council chairmen whose tenure was to end in October this year. (GBN)
