Lagos, Oct. 25, 2024 – Nigeria has joined BRICS as a partner country with 12 other countries.
The other countries are Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
A statement posted on the BRICS official X handle read: “BRICS officially adds 13 new nations to the alliance as partner countries (not full members).”
They joined the group at the just concluded BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, held from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24, 2024.
BRICS was initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) in 2009 and received South Africa as a member in 2010 to influence the rebrand of its acronym to BRICS.
Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates gained full membership in January 2024 and attended their first BRICS summit as full members at the 2024 gathering in Russia.
BRICS’core mission is to foster trade, investment, development, security, and cooperation among leading emerging market economies. (GBN)
