Abuja, March 20, 2025 – The National Assembly has approved the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.
The two chambers of the National Assembly approved the emergency declaration at their separate session on Thursday.
The House of Representatives earlier adopted the proclamation through a voice vote of the 243 members in attendance.
The House, however, made recommendations that a national committee be set up to restore peace in Rivers State, while the National Assembly should take over the activities of the River State Assembly during the period of the emergency.
The senate adopted the emergency declaration later during a closed-door session.
Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, announced the adoption, saying the Senate relied on its Orders 133, 134, 135 and 136 in taking the decision.
