Lagos, Nov. 11, 2023 – MTN, the largest GSM operator in Nigeria, on Saturday blamed system glitch for debt cancellation in some customers’ accounts.
It said all its subscribers who had taken airtime or data loans would pay debts in their accounts.
It stressed that all its subscribers, who had taken airtime or data loans from MTN, would pay back the debts.
“MTN Nigeria Communications Plc can confirm a system glitch impacting balance enquiries. As a result, some customers may receive error messages showing that their balances have been cleared.
“This is not the case and all balances will reflect accurate figures once the problem is resolved. Our engineers are currently working to ensure this. Please accept our apologies. We regret the inconvenience,” an MTN source said.
Many of the affected subscribers, who believed the telecom operator deliberately cancelled their debts, have gone to social media to jubilate and thanked the telecom company.
But another MTN source also confirmed the glitch, saying subscribers must pay their debts.
“Users would still be responsible for paying the ostensibly cleared bills even after MTN fixes the problem that caused the debts to vanish from their accounts.” (GBN)
