Abuja, June 10, 2023 -The presidency on Friday night announced the elevation of Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi as the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) following the suspension of the incumbent, Godwin Emefiele.
Shonubi was before the announcement, the Deputy Governor of CBN (Operations).
In the announcement, the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had asked the suspended CBN Governor, Emefiele, to hand over to the Deputy Governor, Operations, with immediate effect.
Shonubi has been the Deputy Governor of CBN since June 2018.
He assumed the office on Oct. 7, 2018 following the approval by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Shonubi holds two Masters’ degrees in Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering, respectively, from the University of Lagos.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Governor in the CBN,, he was the Managing Director of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) from 2012 to 2018.
He was one of the brains behind the introduction of the Bank Verification Number (BVN).
Hitherto, Shonubi was an Executive Director (ICT)in Union Bank of Nigeria and a member of the Board of Union Homes.
He had worked in MBC International as Deputy General Manager between 1999 and 2007.
Shonubi also had a stint in Citibank Nigeria Limited as its Head, Treasury Operations from 1990 to-1993..
He has served on a number of sub-committees of the Bankers’ Committee, including the Ethics and Professionalism sub-committee. (GBN)
