Lagos, Jan. 18, 2025 – The federal government is to enact a law to protect the telecommunication sector and facilitate the growth of the digital economy.
Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, said this while speaking on “Prime Time”, on Arise Television on Thursday night.
He said President Bola Tinubu would send the Telecommunication and E-commerce Bill to the National Assembly before the end of February and expressed optimism that the bill will be passed before the end of the year.
The minister said the legislation would provide enabling environment for the growth of the telecom sector and protect the budding digital economy.
He described the Nigerian telecom sector as the biggest in Africa in terms of investments and number of workers.
Tijanni also said the sector, the third biggest contributor to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), had the potential to facilitate the achievement of N1 trillion economy.
He said the president was really keen on the achievement of this target, a reason for his interest in the growth and development of the sector.
The minister said the plan to extend the fibre optic cable to cover the whole of the country would soon be realised.
He said government was also planning a fibre-to-home project that would enable fibre cables connected directly to homes.
Tijani said the project would facilitate better reception of telecom signals at homes at cheaper costs. (GBN)
