Lagos, Oct. 22, 2025 – The Dangote Refinery is to increase its capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day (mbpd), the highest in the world.
Aliko Dangote, the Chairman of Dangote Group, disclosed this during a recent interview with S&P Global.
He said the initial plan was to expand the refining capacity to 700,000, but this has changed to surpass the world’s largest 1.36 million bpd refinery in Jamnagar, India.
“I want to demonstrate what this refinery can do, then we can sit down and talk.
“Now, the target is to reach 1.4 mbpd, with no specified date, a scale that would surpass the world’s largest 1.36 mbpd refinery in Jamnagar, India,” he said.
Dangote said achieving the new target could be herculean, but is achievable.
“We have to build the refinery again, either here or somewhere else. But really, somewhere else is not possible because we’d have to go and spend so much building infrastructure, and we have the infrastructure already here,” he said.
Dangote also spoke about divesting shares in the company to allow willing Nigerians to participate in the company
“Our business concept is going to change. Now instead of being 100 per cent Dangote-owned, we’ll have other partners.
“We don’t want to keep more than 65-70 per cent,”
Dangote said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) could also take the opportunity to increase its stake in the company.
Dangote promised that the shares would be listed on the Nigerian Exchange within the next few years.
