Tinubu approves commencement of commercial drilling at Tongeji, kick-off of Olokola Deep Seaport project

Abeokuta, Jan, 23, 2026 – President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

A statement issued by Ogun State government on Thursday said Gov. Dapo Abiodun announced the development while receiving Rear Adm. Abubakar Mustapha, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, who paid him a courtesy visit in Abeokuta.

Tongeji Island is a small island which lies along waterways near the border with the Republic of Benin.

The governor also announced that Tinubu has also approved the immediate kick-off of the Olokola Deep Seaport project located in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

The seaport project, now renamed the Blue Marine Economic Zone, represents a major breakthrough that would help decongest existing ports in Lagos. while unlocking significant economic opportunities for coastal communities in Ogun State and beyond.

Abiodun said the federal government had shown strong interest in both projects and that engagements are ongoing to fast-track their implementation.

He commended the Nigeria Navy for upgrading its presence at Tongeji Island to a Forward Operations Base to strengthen border security,
