CBN launches BVN for non-residents

Abuja, May 14, 2025 – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has launched the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) for Nigerians abroad.

Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the apex bank, disclosed this via a statement on his X.

He said the CBN was working in partnership with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) on the project.

The statement reads in parts: “NRBVN is a major milestone in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive, and it reflects a commitment to innovation and an inclusive growth for economic integration.

“Through digital verification and robust know your customer (KYC) process, Nigerians across the globe can now remotely obtain their BVN swiftly and securely.

“The NRBVN is a dynamic, evolving platform—a bridge connecting Nigeria with its global citizens—and reaffirms the Bank’s commitment to lowering remittance costs and expanding financial inclusion for all Nigerians.”

Cardoso said the NRBVN would offer a single digital channel that enables Nigerians abroad to open accounts, send money securely, and have access to other banking services with ease.
