Abuja, April 15, 2025 – Importation of petrol into Nigeria has dropped by an average of 30 million litres per day between August 2024 and April 2025.
Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), said this in Abuja on Tuesday at the “Meet-the-Press” briefing of the Presidential Communications Team in Abuja.
He said petrol importation had dropped from 44.6 million litres per day in August 2024 to 14.7 million litres per day by mid-April 2025, representing a 67 per cent reduction.
The NMDPRA boss attributed the drop to increased local production of petrol occasioned by the gradual resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refining Company and output from modular refineries.
He said local supply of petrol had increased by 670% in the last eight months due to the improved performance of the local refineries.
Ahmed said that while government would continue to grant import licences to bridge the supply gap, priority would be given to boosting the local refining capacity for energy security.
