Lagos, Feb. 23, 2025 – The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has warned that the ongoing strike by petrol tankers may lead to disruption of telecommunication services in Lagos and Ogun states
Members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have embarked on strike over constant harassment by police in Lagos State.
Tony Emoekpere, the ATCON President, gave the warning in a statement in Lagos on Sunday.
He said the strike had led to the suspension of loading operations of trucks, adding that shortage of diesel was posing a threat to smooth operation of telecommunications services in the two states.
The statement reads in parts: “The ongoing strike is severely disrupting the diesel supply to our members’ base stations in Lagos and Ogun States, causing significant concern as numerous telecom sites are now critically low on diesel, threatening service disruptions,”
“This strike, which stems from the persistent harassment of tanker and petroleum product drivers by police officers in Lagos State, has effectively halted all truck loading operations and fuel movements.
“As a result, diesel supply to telecom infrastructure has been severely impacted, leaving critical sites running dangerously low on fuel.
“This is not just a telecom issue; it is a national emergency that could cripple economic activities and compromise public safety.
“We respectfully request the urgent intervention of the Governors of Lagos and Ogun States to facilitate access to diesel from the depot, ensuring uninterrupted operation of our affected telecom sites.” (GBN)
