Kaduna, Jan. 8, 2025 – The Kaduna State Government plans to plant 10 million trees within the next four years under its afforestation programme.
Abubakar Buba, the state Commissioner of Environment, said the programme was aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and protecting the environment.
Buba told some stakeholders in Kaduna on Wednesday that the state government had already planted 1.7 million trees in 2024 as part of the programme.
He promised that his ministry would increase the number of trees to be planted in 2025.
“The major challenge of climate change is carbon emission, greenhouse gases and the likes, and the major thing that absorbs carbon dioxide is trees.
“We expect residents not just to plant trees, but to nurture them to grow not just in the cities, but in the suburbs and villages as well,’’ he said.
Buba described the state governor as an environmentally friendly governor and commended him for initiating a “greener and cleaner Kaduna State”.
He said the governor had mandated the ministry to de-silt about 140 kilometres of drainages within the city centre to easing free flow of water during the raining season.
Buba said the governor had also directed the ministry to dredge River Kaduna and other water bodies in the state to ensure free flow of water from the drainages.
