Abuja, Oct. 11, 2024 – The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has successfully linked SIM cards of all phones in the country to the National Identification Number (NIN) of their owners.
Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, announced this during the 2024 Annual Corporate Governance Conference in Lagos State.
“There is no phone number that we cannot associate with a verified NIN. Not just a number, but a number that has been verified.”
“We have successfully implemented the federal government’s 2020 policy, linking every phone number to a NIN.
“While it may have been challenging for Nigerians, we must recognise its benefits
“Today, every phone number is connected to a verified NIN, not just any number, but one that has been fully authenticated,” he said.
Maida said the essence of NIN-SIM linkage initiative was to reduce crime rate and enhance national security. (GBN)
