Lagos, Aug. 25, 2025 – Some communities in rural areas enjoy more stable power supply than those in urban centres.
Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), disclosed this on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s programme “The Morning Brief.”
He said many rural communities now enjoy stable electricity supply through completed mini-grid projects and consequently pay higher tariffs than Band A customers in urban centres.
Aliyu said the stable electricity being enjoyed by rural communities was due the electricity model deployed in rural areas which had not only provided reliable supply but also demonstrated the willingness of rural dwellers to pay for power.
“There are communities, there are rural areas that pay more tariffs than Band A customers.
“There are areas where the tariff is close to N250 and N280,” he said.
The REA boss said electricity charges in rural areas varied among the communities depending on the total cost of infrastructure deployed by the agency.
He said the system allowed for flexibility as some locations pay less than Band A customers, while others pay significantly higher.
“They pay for their electricity and they enjoy it, but there are other areas where the tariff is less than Band A.
“It’s subjective on the total cost of infrastructure we deploy within those communities,” he said.
Aliyu also said the agency had completed many mini-grids and interconnected mini-grids for universities and general hospitals across the six geopolitical zones in the country.
