Abuja, Dec.23, 2022 – Aisha Ahmad, a Deputy Governor in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Thursday said the apex bank ordered for printing of 500 million pieces of redesigned naira notes.

“We ordered for 500 million pieces of currency from the Mint. That was what we ordered,” she said.

Ahmad said this while briefing lawmakers at the National Assembly on the newly redesigned naira notes and CBN new policy on limited cash withdrawal.

She also said that the cashless policy and naira redesign by the CBN were not politically motivated.

Ahmad had earlier said she did not have the exact figures on the volume of new notes printed and would not want to give wrong account to the National Assembly.

However, in the course of the briefing, she later told the lawmakers that 500 million pieces of the redesigned notes were ordered for printing.

The deputy governor came to the National Assembly on Thursday to represent Governor Godwin Emefiele, who was invited, but could not appear for health reasons.

The lawmakers had summoned the CBN governor to appear before them to explain issues arising from the newly redesigned naira notes and the new policy on limited cash withdrawals. (GBN)
