Abuja, Nov. 3, 2024 – The House of Representatives is to set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over its plan to retire1,000 staff.
It is also investigating the N50 billion entitlement claims to be paid to the staff to be disengaged.
This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Kama Nkemkama, a member representing Ohaozara/Oncha/Ivo Federal Constituency, Ebonyi State.
Nkemkama, while addressing the House on the motion, urged his colleagues to investigate the matter and the N50 billion earmarked to pay off the affected staff.
He said the House should be concerned about the mass retirement of over 1,000 staff, including directors and senior management.
He said the issue raised critical questions about the criteria for selection, transparency, and adherence to due process in line with public service guidelines and labour laws at the CBN.
The lawmaker said the issue would have socio-economic implications for the affected individuals, their dependents, and the broader economy, potentially leading to increased unemployment and public dissatisfaction.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to Investigate the matter.
It advised the CBN to suspend implementation of the mass retirement and the associated N50 billion earmarked as payoff. (GBN)
