Police recover N8.82bn, $115,237.91, $84,000 from cybercriminals

Abuja, Jan. 7, 2024 – The Nigeria Police Force recovered N8.82 billion, $11,237.91 and $84,000 from cybercriminals in 2024.

CP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Spokesman, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

He said the National Cybercrime Center of the force successfully recovered the funds and returned them to the victims.

The statement said the Cybercrime Center also apprehended and prosecuted over 751 cybercrime suspects during the year, while various devices like mobile phones, laptops, computers, routers, servers, a drone, and Starlink devices were recovered from them.

It said that the exceptional performance of the unit during the year had earned it recognition from the INTERPOL Cybercrime Directorate as the “Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa for 2024.”

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to combating cyber threats and staying ahead of cybercriminals.

“We are enhancing the nation’s overall cybersecurity framework to protect the welfare of our citizens in the digital era,” the statement said.

It advised the citizens to remain vigilant and exercise caution when sharing sensitive information or engaging with unfamiliar online entities.  (GBN)
