Accra, March 16, 2024 – Dr Abdul Ibrahim, President, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), says the body is hopeful of surpassing the number of medals won at the 2019 African Games in Morocco.
Ibrahim, apparently excited that Nigeria has won 1 gold and 2 silver medals in the women’s weightlifting at the opening of the event at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday said it is achievable.
Nigeria’s Osijo Mary Taiwo won1 gold and 2 silver medals in the 87kg category of women weightlifting.
With the wins, the weightlifting federation has won 16 gold medals, equalling the 16 gold, 18 silver and 13 bronze medals won at the 12th African Games in Morocco in 2019.
“We are happy to have equaled the number of medals won at the last African Games. We are optimistic of winning more medals to surpass that record. It is achievable,’’ he said.
On her part, Osijo said after her victory that she was happy with the medals won.
“I feel excited and I am happy. Winning the gold medal was not easy.
“My coach had always told me that my six attempts are very important and I got all my six attempts. I thank God for this victory,’’ she said.
“I love weightlifting. It’s my passion. I thank my coach for inspiring me. I’m proud of Nigeria,’’ she said. (GBN)
