Kano, Aug. 6, 2023 – About 250 cooperative groups across Kano State are to be supported by the state government as part of the state’s empowerment programme.
Jamilu Kiru, the Special Adviser to Gov. Abba Kabiru Yusuf on Cooperatives, said this in Kano on Sunday.
“Governor Abba Yusuf has a comprehensive socio-economic development plan for our dear Kano State.
“He is determined to stimulate and enhance commerce and industrialisation, energy, security, as well as climate change initiatives in the state.
“The administration has equally resolved to deliver quality and accessible healthcare services, functional education, rural development, and water supply.”
Kiru said the various cooperative societies in different trades like agriculture, commerce, handicrafts, artisans, and transportation would be selected, trained and empowered.
He said the empowerment was in line with current digisation of economic activities.
“Majority of our people live in rural areas and lack basic knowledge and benefits of cooperative. They don’t belong to or form cooperative societies.
“They are also deficient in modern Information and communication technology (ICT) and how it is driving socio-economic activities,” Abbas Kiru, also National President of the Market and Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN),” he said.
He said government would help them to establish and empower such cooperative groups as well as link them up with finance and banking institutions to give them to access intervention funds. (GBN)
