Gunmen kill Kwara traditional ruler, kidnap wife, 2 others

Ilorin, Feb. 2, 2024 – The Kwara State Government has confirmed the murder of Oba Peter Segun Aremu, the Olukoro of Koro in Ekiti Local Government and kidnap of his wife and two others by suspected gunmen.

The traditional ruler,a retired army general, was allegedly shot dead in his palace on Thursday night, while his wife and two others were taken away.

In a statement by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Gov. Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, described the incident as reckless, shocking, and horrific.

Kwara governor, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), condemned the killing of the monarch as well as the abduction of his wife and two others.

He charged the security agencies in the state not to spare any resources to track down the perpetrators, free the spouse and others taken away, and bring them to book.

 “We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity.

“My profound condolences go to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always.”

The Kwara Police Command has also issued a statement over the incident

The statement, issued the Spokesperson for the Command, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, said the police authorities in the state had vowed to clamp down on the perpetrators and rescue the victims.

 “The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of The Commissioner of Police CP Victor OLAIYA (psc+), expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire community affected by this heinous act.

“Our prayers are with them during this challenging time.

“Immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act. We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.”  (GBN)
