ECOWAS imposes more sanctions on Niger

Abuja, Aug. 8, 2023 – ECOWAS has imposed further sanctions on Niger Republic following the coup leaders’ refusal to abide by its ultimatum.

Ajuri Ngelale, the Presidential Spokesman, told State House correspondents on Tuesday that more sanctions had been imposed on Niger and allied countries

He did not give the details, but said the sanctions would be carried out through the Central Bank of Nigeria.

ECOWAS, had on July 30, given a seven-day ultimatum to the junta to restore democracy and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum or risk sanctions, including possible military action.

Following the expiration of the ultimatum, ECOWAS has scheduled another extraordinary summit for Thursday to review the situation in Niger. (GBN)
