Abuja, Feb. 8, 2023 -The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed Nigerian banks to freeze all accounts relating to a Pakistani, Abdul Rehman Makki.
Abdul Rehman Makki, has been linked to a terror group, Al-Qeada, by the United Nations Security Council.
The UN Security Council had, on January 16, 2023, approved the addition of Makki to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaeda Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.
A circular on the website of the CBN, had on Wednesday, directed all financial institutions “to immediately: screen their customer database for business relationship with the designated individual and file a report to the NFIU; and update their sanctions screening list to reflect the recent changes in the UNSC Consolidated Lists.”
The circular signed by the CBN Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Harry Audu, said all banks must comply immediately.
Makki, who is of Pakistani birth, was born in Bahawalpur, Punjab Province. (GBN)
