Unlawful detention: ECOWAS court orders Benin Republic to pay Sunday Igboho 20m CFA

Abuja, Dec. 5, 2023 – The ECOWAS Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered Benin Republic to pay Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, the sum of 20 million CFA for unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental human rights.

The court directed that the money should be paid to the plaintiff within three months from the day of judgment –

In the judgment, delivered by Justices Gberi-Bé Ouattara, Sengu Koroma, and Ricardo Monteiro, the court also ordered the Benin Government to report back with the evidence of payment.

The judgment followed an application brought before the court by Sunday Adetemo against the defendant, Benin Republic), challenging his arrest and detention by country.

The application was filed before the ECOWAS Court in Abuja, on Feb. 10, 2022. (GBN)
