Abuja, Aug. 15, 2023 – The Federal Government on Tuesday filed 20 fresh charges against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), at a Federal Capital Territory court in Abuja
Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), announced this to journalists.
This was after the Federal Government had attempted to withdraw the “illegal possession of firearms” case which it filed against Emefiele at the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
This was to enable it substitute the “illegal possession of firearms” charge with the new 20 fresh charges bothering on conferment of undue advantage.
The DPP had told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the application followed the result of further investigations.
Joseph Daudu, the Defence Counsel to Emefiele, however, opposed the application, arguing that the application should not be taken because the government had disobeyed the court’s order granting Emefiele bail.
Justice Oweibo, had on July 25, granted Emefiele, who was on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, bail of N20 million.
He had directed that Emefiele be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the completion of his bail conditions.
The Department of State Services (DSS), however, re-arrested him at the court premises. (GBN)
