Abuja, Aug, 3, 2023 – The Presidency says the organised labour has agreed to suspend its ongoing nationwide protests after their meeting with President Tinubu on Wednesday evening.
Dele Alake, the Presidential Spokesman, said in a statement, that: “Consequent upon the fruitful and frank discussions with President Tinubu, the Nigeria Labour Congress, led by Comrade Joe Ajaero, and that of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Usifo, have resolved to stop further protests.
He said the protesting unions opted for further constructive engagement with the government to resolve all outstanding issues as they affected the working people and Nigerians in general.
“Tinubu also assured the labour leaders that the Port Harcourt refineries would start production by December 2023 after the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between the NNPCL and Italian firm Maire Tecnimont SpA.
“Tinubu also assured the labour leaders that he would continue to work in the best interest of Nigeria, and pleaded with the unions to join hands with him to birth a better and economically buoyant country.
“The organised labour agreed that it discussed deeper details of the Federal Government’s intervention to reduce the economic hardship occasioned by the discontinuation of petrol subsidy on May 29, 2023.
“The union leaders, however, said suspending the ongoing nationwide protests was hinged on the decision of its Executive Councils who will meet on Wednesday night and Thursday,'” Alake said. (GBN)
