PDP Abuja, May 26, 2023 -The Supreme Court in Abuja on Friday cleared another hurdle on the way to the inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and Vice President, Kashim Shetima, on May 29.
The apex court dismissed a suit instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asking for the disqualification of Tinubu and Shettima, for double nomination of Shetima in the 2023 elections.
The PDP had claimed that Shetima was nominated for two political offices in the elections by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It contented that Shetima was nominated for the office of the vice president and at same time nominated for the Borno Central Senatorial District.
It claimed this a contravention of the provisions of Sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1)(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022.
The PDP did not only seek for the disqualification Tinubu and Shetima from participating in the 2023 elections, but also to invalidate their candidacies.
Delivering judgment on Friday, Supreme Court ruled that the PDP lacked the locus Standi to institute the case as it was not a member of the APC.
Justice Adamu Jauro said the PDP acted as meddlesome Interloper and a busy body in the matter, stressing that the matter was an internal affair of the APC.
Aside from dismissing the suit for lack in merit, the court also imposed a fine of two million naira against the PDP. (GBN)
