Colorado (USA), May 18, 2023 – A Nigerian immigrant and businessman, Yemi Mobolade, has made history by winning the mayoral election in Colorado Springs, a municipality in Colorado, USA.
According to the Colorado Sun, Mobolade’s victory marks a significant political shift as he is the first Black man to be elected to lead the city.
Despite having no prior political experience, Mobolade defeated Wayne Williams in the city’s runoff contest on Tuesday night to become the new mayor.
Mobolade’s win signifies a significant shift in the political landscape of Colorado Springs, which has long been recognized as a conservative stronghold. The report notes that Wayne Williams is a Republican, while Mobolade has no political affiliation.
Mobolade secured 57 percent of the votes compared to Williams’ 43 percent, prompting Williams to concede at approximately 7:30 p.m. The percentages did not change when the second batch of results was released just before 9 p.m.
Mobolade will become the 42nd mayor of the city, taking over from Mayor John Suthers, a former federal prosecutor and Colorado attorney general who was prevented from running again due to term limits. (GBN)
