134 killed in 5 days in Benue, Ortom appeals for more troops

Makurdi, April 8, 2023 – Samuel Ortom, the Benue State Governor, has appealed to the Federal Government to deploy more troops to the state following the killing of 134 people in the five days in the state.

Ortom made the call on Saturday during a visit to Mgbam community in Nyiev council ward of Guma Local Government Area where 36 people were killed and 40 injured including internally displaced persons (IDPs) were killed by suspected herdsmen on Friday night.

There are reports that suspected herdsmen had resumed attacks on rural communities in Kwande, Guma and Gwer West LGAs in Benue State immediately after the presidential and national assembly elections.

About 47 persons were killed on Monday in Ikobi community of Apa Local Government Area including the traditional ruler.

on Wednesday, another 51 persons were killed in Umogidi community of Otukpo Local G0vernment Area.

With 134 deaths, Ortom expressed displeasure that IDPs and farming communities in the state had become targets for suspected herdsmen. (GBN)
