Abuja, Feb. 17, 2023 The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied reports that it gave commercial banks the authority to receive old N500 and N1000 notes.
The CBN described the report as fake and misleading.
The apex bank issued a denial on Friday evening, saying it never issued such a statement.
This confusion is coming barely 24 hours after the president announced that the two notes had seized to be legal tender since Feb. 10.
The president advised those with the old N500 and N1000 notes to deposit them at the CBN.
“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorized messages quoting the CBN as having authorized Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N Banknotes 1000.
“For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023.
“Media practitioners are advised to PLEASE verify any publication from the correct sources before publication,” it said. (GBN)
