Abuja, Feb. 7, 2023 – Godwin Emiefele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says the apex bank cannot be used to frustrate the forthcoming general elections.

Emiefele, gave the assurance when the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu, and some officials paid him a visit on Tuesday.

He promised that the CBN would make available every cash that will be needed to pay for logistics to make the elections successful.

“If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you. We will not allow ourselves to be seen as agents that frustrate a genuine assignment,” he said.

The INEC chairman said that while INEC had promised to make the 2023 election the best in the history of the country, Nigerians had already been expressing concerns on the attainment of this goal.

He said that he was particularly concerned about the issue of logistics since some of the services that would be rendered during the elections would be paid for in cash.

Yakubu said the Commission had transferred all its accounts at the state and national level to the apex bank. (GBN)
