Lagos, Sept. 25, 2025 – In a passionate appeal to safeguard the future of Nigerian youth, Mr. Olufemi Orioye, a respected community leader and media practitioner, has called on government authorities, parents, and civil society to intensify efforts in combating drug abuse, cultism, and other societal vices.
Speaking at a youth sensitization programme themed “Nigerian Youths, Rise Against Drug Abuse”, organized by the Network Against Drug Abuse and Cultism in Lagos, Orioye emphasized that these destructive habits are eroding the potential of young Nigerians and fueling crime across communities.
“Drug abuse and cultism are enemies of progress,” Orioye declared. “They have destroyed countless lives and dreams, and many youths have ended up behind bars due to these vices.”
He attributed the rise in drug use to peer pressure and a lack of proper guidance, urging the federal government to empower the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to expand awareness campaigns nationwide.
Orioye stressed that while government intervention is critical, parents must also take responsibility for instilling values and discipline in their children.
Commending the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) under Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa, Orioye praised the agency’s aggressive crackdown on drug trafficking and its efforts to dismantle illicit drug networks.
He encouraged the NDLEA to extend its operations to known hotspots to further disrupt the illegal trade.
Orioye reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to the cause, stressing that the Network Against Drug Abuse and Cultism will continue to partner with government agencies and schools to educate young people.
According to him, this campaign is ongoing and will not be stopped until Nigeria is free from the grip of hard drugs.
Founded a decade ago, the Network has reached numerous public and private schools across the country, delivering impactful messages about the dangers of drug abuse and criminal behaviour.
The event drew participation from educators, government officials, parents, and youth leaders, all united in the mission to protect and empower the next generation.
