Abuja, Feb. 2, 2023 – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks to start paying the new naira notes across the counter.
The apex bank said, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, that the directive was to reduce queues around ATMs across the country.
The statement, signed by Osita Nwanisobi, the CBN Director Corporate Communication, directed that banks could only pay N20,000 notes over the counter to an individual in a day.
“The Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has directed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to commence the payment of the redesigned Naira notes over the counter, subject to a maximum daily payout limit of N20,000,” the statement said.
It urged Nigerians to exercise patience as CBN was working assiduously to address the challenges of queues at ATMs. (GBN)
