Ibadan, July 1, 2025 – Business activities in parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were ruffled on Tuesday morning as rampaging students of Ibadan Polytechnic took to the street protesting the renaming of the school.
The state government, had on Thursday, June 26, 2025, renamed the polytechnic after Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of the state and also the first principal of the school
The renaming of the school did not go down well with the student as they took to the street on Tuesday morning in protest against the name change.
The protesters disrupted business activities in Sango, Bodija and Eleyele areas as they marched toward the Oyo State Government Secretariat to lodge their grievance with the state government.
Markets and shops on the route were forced to close down, while commercial buses were also forced off the streets.
Workers and traders, going to their places of work through the Sango-Eleyele Road, were stranded while the protest lasted.
The students, who were led by Olamide Oladipupo, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG), appealed to the state government to reverse its decision to rename the polytechnic after Olunloyo.
Olunloyo died on April 6, 2025.
