Lagos, April 19, 2025 – Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chief Executive of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), says human trafficking will continue as long the perpetrators and agents were not exposed and shamed.
Dabiri-Erewa said this in Lagos while receiving another set of three girls who were trafficked to Ghana at the NIDCOM office after they were handed over to NAPTIP.
She thanked Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, the Chairman of NIDO Ghana Board of Trustees, who she said, had been consistent in the war against trafficking by working with the Ghanaian security agencies to rescue them, the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana for effective consular support and the First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, for helping with the transportation.
She expressed displeasure that the incidence of human trafficking was still on the increase globally in spite of efforts of NAPTIP in rescuing and arresting traffickers.
Dabiri-Erewa said the incidence had been on the rise because people were shying away from naming and shaming those behind the modern-day slavery.
More than 169 Nigerians have been repatriated to the country from Ghana in the last few months.
The latest batch of three returnees aged between 17 and 19 and from Bayelsa and Ebonyi states, Divine, Favour and Bright, claimed that they were lured into the sex trade by their aunties in Ghana under the guise of helping them to secure job.
The girls were handed over to NAPTIP for proper profiling and reintegration as required by law.
