Lagos, Dec. 23, 2024 – About 180,000 federal government pensioners are yet to be paid their pension benefits more than one year after their retirement.
Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), disclosed this at the just concluded workshop for journalists in Lagos.
She said the affected pensioners were those who retired from November 2023 to date.
The N44 billion released by the federal government in November covered only payment of accrued rights to workers who retired from March to October 2023.
The PENCOM boss blamed lack of funds to pay their accrued rights for the situation..
She said the government had not released funds for their accrued tights, but PENCOM was working to ensure the payment of the benefits before the end of the year.
“We are looking at a lasting solution going forward. We are working on an initiative with the Ministry of Finance and before the end of the year, that should come to fruition.
“The first set of people that should be getting paid at all in government should be contributors under the CPS because they have contributed. For me, it is a lasting solution.
“We are working with the government to ensure that once you are retired, within a month, you should get your benefits.
“I’m optimistic that we should be able to achieve it,” she said.
