Abuja, Nov. 12, 2024 – Some protesting federal government retirees on Tuesday shut down the Federal Ministry of Finance over their unpaid accrued pension rights.
The affected retirees who those who retired from 2003 and have not been paid their retirement benefits due to failure of the federal government to remit their accrued pension rights.
The accrued right represents pension entitlements under the old pension scheme transferred  to beneficiaries in the Contributory Pension Scheme introduced in 2004
The accrued right constitutes a substantial portion of the total pension benefits of retirees who were in service before the contributory scheme.
Sylva Nwaiwu, the National Chairman of the National Union of Contributory Pensioners, who led the protesters, said many retirees from 2003 had not been paid the accrued pension rights.
He said the federal government had refused to pay the entitlement in spite of appeals by the union, hence the recourse to the protest.
The union leader urged the federal government to pay accrued rights immediately.
