Abuja, Aug. 14, 2024 – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has suggested the establishment of a special court to try cases of crude oil theft.
Abdulkarim Chukkol, the Director of Investigation of the commission, made the suggestion in Abuja on Wednesday at the ongoing hearing of the House of Representatives Special Committee on Crude Oil Theft.
He said over 400 cases bordering on crude oil theft were charged o courts in 2019 with 200 others prosecuted in 2022.
Chukkol said the creation of a special court and the amendment of the legal framework of the agency would help EFCC to address crude oil theft.
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive of the NNPCL, had earlier made the suggestion during the National Judges Capacity Building Workshop on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
He had called for the support of the judiciary in tackling the challenges of crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism. (GBN)
