Abuja, May 2, 2024 -The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) are in talks on the prospect of dedicated SIM cards for JAMB candidates with restricted functionalities.
Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the JAMB, who disclosed this at a press conference recently, said this became imperative in view of the increasing significance of candidates’ SIM cards.
He said with the introduction of new admission method, the significance of the candidates’ SIM had escalated as they were now required for conducting increasingly sensitive operations.
He explained that under the new procedure, “a candidate may either transmit ACCEPT or REJECT via their dedicated telephone line to 55019/66019, or personally endorse or decline any offer of admission (inclusive of programme alterations) using their fingerprint at an authorised CBT centre or any JAMB office.
“These freshly devised methods for admission decisions are designed to safeguard the candidates’ information and maintain the integrity of the admission process,” he said.
On the current admission exercise, Oloyede said that 70 percent of the 1,842,464 candidates whose 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results were released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Monday scored less than 200.
He said of the 1,842,464 candidates released, 8,401 candidates scored 300 and above; 77,070 scored 250 and above; 439,974 scored 200 and above, while 1,402,490 scored below 200.
Oloyede said the board was expected to announce the minimum benchmark for the 2024/2025 academic session admissions during its policy meeting to be held at a later date.
Over the years the benchmark for admissions to universities has hovered around 180 to 200. (GBN)
