Lagos, March 17, 2024 – The repair of the damaged sub-sea cables and restoration of full internet services in West African countries will take a minimum of five weeks.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana said this in a statement at the weekend.
Telecom services along the West African coastline have been disrupted since Thursday, March 14, due to cuts on international sub-sea cables supplying connectivity within the region.
The damage occurred somewhere around Senegal and Ivory Coast with similar damage around Portugal.
The NCA said that it had held meetings with senior staff of telecom service providers as well as four sub-sea cable landing providers – ACE, MainOne, SAT-3 and WACs – and this was their assurance.
“The sub-sea cable landing service providers have indicated an estimated time frame of a minimum of five (5) weeks for full-service restoration from the time the vessels are dispatched to the various locations,” it said.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) also issued a statement on Friday on the damaged sub-sea cables which had caused disruptions to telecom services in the country.
It has assured of the commencement of the repair works on the affected cables, but did not give any time frame as to the completion of the repairs and restoration of full telecom services in the country. (GBN)
