Abuja, Dec. 20, 2022 – Dr Doyin Okupe, the Director General of 2023 Presidential Campaign Council of Labour Party, was allowed home on Monday after payment of the prescribed fines.
Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Monday jailed for two and half years by a Federal High Court in Abuja for receiving over N200 million cash from a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).
Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, the Presiding Judge, had held that Okupe, who was the first defendant in the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes, violated some sections of the Money Laundering Act.
She, however, gave him an option of N500, 000 fine on each of the 26-count charges for which he was found guilty.
Ojukwu directed that Okupe had up to 4.30pm on Monday to pay the fines totaling N13 million or be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Reliable sources, however, said that Okupe was able to pay the fines before the court closed on Monday.
“Okupe has paid; they returned with the bank papers around 4.25pm. The court processed it, and everybody signed, including the EFCC lawyer,” court sources said. (GBN)
