Bauchi, March 24, 2024 – The Bauchi Police Command has confirmed the death of three women during a stampede at a Zakat (alms giving) venue in Bauchi on Sunday.Â
The stampede occurred at about 10.00 am at the Headquarters of Shafa Holdings Company on Jos Road, Bauchi.
The crowd, largely women, had gathered for the distribution of the Zakat items when the restlessness of some women resulted in the stampede which led to casualties.
Many of the victims, who were unconscious, were rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) where a medical doctor confirmed four fatalities including a young lady who was still unconscious.
SP Ahmed Wakili, the Spokesperson for the state police command, said the command immediately directed urgent action and personnel to the scene when it got the distress call.
He said the police operatives assisted in rescue operations and cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties, halting the distribution exercise. (GBN)
