Abuja, Oct. 8, 2025 – The Senate has urged the federal government to establish a permanent military base in Kwara South Senatorial District.
It particularly suggested that the military base should be established within forest belts of Ifelodun Local Government Area to check rising banditry and kidnapping in the area.
The Senate also summoned the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector-General of Police to appear before it to brief lawmakers on the rising insecurity in the Senatorial district.
These resolutions followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Yisa Oyelola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South) titled: “Urgent Need to Address Insecurity in Kwara South Senatorial District, Particularly Ifelodun Local Government Area – Call for Immediate and Comprehensive Federal Intervention.”
While presenting the motion, Ashiru expressed grave concern over the rising insecurity in the area and particularly in Ifelodun and adjoining local government areas.
‘In just the past month, no fewer than 12 forest guards and local vigilante members were ambushed and killed by armed bandits in Oke-Ode.
“Among those slain were traditional rulers and community leaders from Ogba-Ayo, Babanla, Sagbe, Oro Ago, and Ganmu-Alheri,” he said.
The Senator said over 142 people had been kidnapped and more than 70 killed within the Senatorial district.
He also said at least 25 communities had been deserted due to repeated attacks, leading to humanitarian crises and social disruption.
Supporting the motion, Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West), said many communities in the district had been overrun by bandits.
He called for urgent response by the government, saying “Our people are suffering and we must act urgently.”
Senator Sadiq Umar (APC, Kwara North) also stressed the need for stronger legislative oversight on security matters to check growing insecurity in the country.
