Abuja, Aug. 10, 2023 – Presidents of 10 West African countries are attending the second extraordinary summit of ECOWAS on Niger coup being held today in Abuja.
Those in attendance are President Bola Tinubu, the ECOWAS Chairman and President of Nigeria, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, President. Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea Bissau and President Everiste Ndayishimiye of Burundi.
Others are President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania, President Nana Akofo-Ado of Ghana, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic and Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo.
Some of these leaders were also at the first extraordinary meeting of Niger coup held in Abuja on July 30, 2023.
At the meeting, the West African leaders took some far-reaching decisions on the situation in Niger Republic in the aftermath of a coup which installed a military junta after sacking the democratically elected government of President Mohamad Bazoum.
These decisions include a 7-day ultimatum given to the coupists to vacate the government and restore President Muhamad Bazoum in power.
They also impose some sanctions on country, some of which are already being implemented, even by countries outside the West African region.
The failure of the Niger military leaders to abide by the 7-day ultimatum necessitated the second extraordinary meeting. (GBN)
